If your annual average rate of sickness absence is more than five days per person (for short- and long-term sickness combined), then it’s too high. And your short-term absence – which we would define as any spells of less than 10 days – should be no more than two or three days per person. If it’s higher you are wasting money and creating a pressurised environment for people who do attend regularly and have to cover the work of people who are frequently absent.
